Belvedere Marittimo
A medieval village on a promontory, dominated by its Aragonese castle, with the marina by the sea.
Belvedere Marittimo is a town of about 8,900 inhabitants in the province of Cosenza. It has two cores: the medieval village, about 150 m up on a rocky promontory, and the Marina by the coast.
Geography
The historic village looks down over the coastal strip, which developed more recently for tourism.
History
Its origins date to the Norman period; the military structure was updated in 1287 by the lord Ruggero Sangineto and in 1490, under Ferrante of Aragon, by the Sanseverino of Bisignano along Renaissance lines. Nearby, Bruttian burials (4th–3rd century BC) and a Roman villa are attested.
What to see
The Castle of Belvedere Marittimo, of Norman-Swabian core later reworked, is today a fortress of Renaissance character (1490). The Chiesetta del Rosario bears the year 1091 on its sandstone portal; the Church of the Santissimo Crocifisso, from 1599, houses a monumental wooden crucifix of 1711 by Pietro Frasa.
Getting there
By car via the A2 “del Mediterraneo” motorway; by train on the Tyrrhenian railway line; the nearest airport is Lamezia Terme.
