History

According to tradition the name derives from the Latin bene facite; the settlement may have been founded by refugees from the ancient city of Hiele after 1057. In 1270 “Castel Bonifati” was a fief granted by Charles I of Anjou.

What to see

The ruins of Castel Bonifati, of Norman origin (13th century), remain; the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary houses an 18th-century statue of the Madonna. Along the coast stand several towers (Torre di Fella, Torre Parise, Torre del Capo).
