Cetraro
A Tyrrhenian-coast town long ruled by the Benedictines of Montecassino, with the church of San Benedetto and a marina.
Cetraro is a town of about 9,100 inhabitants in the province of Cosenza, at 120 m above the sea, split between Cetraro Paese, on the hill, and Cetraro Marina, on the coast.
Geography
The climate is typical of the Mediterranean coast, with hot summers and mild winters.
History
From 1086 to 1810 Cetraro was ruled by the Benedictines of Montecassino, after the donation by Duchess Sichelgaita. In 1534 Barbarossa’s corsairs attacked the town.
What to see
The mother church of San Benedetto Abate dates to 1104 and was rebuilt in Baroque forms in the 18th century. Among other churches are the Chiesa del Ritiro (1454) and the Chiesa di San Nicola in the old centre. The marina, opened in 2009, has about 500 berths.
