Fuscaldo

A town of the Middle Tyrrhenian Cosentino area known for its stonemasons’ portals, among the stream valleys.

Fuscaldo is a town of about 7,900 inhabitants in the province of Cosenza. Its old core sits at 350 m above the sea, between the Maddalena and Mercaudo stream valleys, on the western slopes of the Coastal Range.

Geography

The municipality includes the hilltop village and Marina di Fuscaldo, on the coast.

History

The mother church, dedicated to St James the Greater, already existed in 1166. From 1496 to 1806 the fief was held by the Spinelli dynasty.

What to see

The old centre is famous for the stone portals carved by local stonemasons. The Church of the Immacolata has a 35-metre bell tower with twelve tuff columns and Corinthian capitals; the mother church of San Giacomo preserves frescoes by local masters.

Getting there

By car via the A2 “del Mediterraneo” motorway; by train on the Tyrrhenian railway line; the nearest airport is Lamezia Terme.
