Medieval village of Belvedere Marittimo
The upper town on its 150-metre spur: the Chiesetta del Rosario with its 1091 portal, the birthplace of Saint Daniele Fasanella, the walls and the view over the Riviera dei Cedri.
The medieval village of Belvedere Marittimo gathers on a rocky outcrop about 150 metres above the sea, apart from the Marina that developed later along the coast. The houses look out on one side over the Tyrrhenian and on the other drop towards the narrow valley of the Soleo river, along the slope where the old town walls, renewed in 1287 by Ruggero Sangineto, still hold up the small Church of the Santissimo Crocifisso.
The oldest monument is the Chiesetta del Rosario: carved on its sandstone portal is the date 1091, which takes us back to the Belvedere of the Normans. Among the alleys stands the birthplace of Saint Daniele Fasanella, the patron, celebrated in October; above keeps watch the Sanseverino castle with the coat of arms of Ferrante of Aragon, and in the Rocca district there is a quadrangular Roman watchtower. In via Castel Ruggiero the Museo della Memoria Storica “Città di Belvedere Marittimo” gathers faithful reproductions of the finds made in the area, from the Bruttian tombs of Capo Tirone to the Roman villas.
