Old town of Sangineto

Sangineto’s hilltop village, gathered around the Sanseverino castle: Santa Maria della Neve with its 17th-century portal, the Convent of San Francesco di Paola and the chapels of San Giuseppe, the Carmine and San Michele.

Sangineto

The old town of Sangineto sits on the hill above the coast and is the ancient core of the town that gave its name to the Sangineto family, of Norman origin, which in the 14th century ruled Belvedere, San Marco Argentano, Corigliano and Altomonte. You climb to it from the Lido along the road that leaves the SS18. At the top stands the castle of the Sanseverino of Bisignano, with its arcade and the olive tree of 1918; in the village is the parish church of Santa Maria della Neve, from 1200, with its baptistery and 17th-century portal, dedicated to the patroness celebrated on 5 August. The route continues with the Convent of San Francesco di Paola and three chapels: San Giuseppe, the Madonna del Carmine and San Michele Arcangelo, the second patron celebrated on 28 and 29 September. In the village houses and the surrounding countryside survive a craft of objects in willow, cane and rush, lace and embroidery, and the cooking of hand-made fusilli, frissurata and kid goat that sets Sangineto apart along the Riviera dei Cedri.
