Scarcelli, Cariglio, Pesco and Marina di Fuscaldo
Fuscaldo’s hamlets and their churches: Santa Maria della Stella at Scarcelli, San Michele at Cariglio, the Madonna del Soccorso at Pesco with the feast of 5 August and the Rosario at the Marina with Bertè’s Last Supper.
Fuscaldo is not only the upper village. Between the hill and the sea the municipality spreads into hamlets that each have their own church and their own feast. At Scarcelli, on the road to Paola, Santa Maria della Stella was built with the alms of the faithful: it has three naves, a bell tower on the right side reached from inside, a painting of the Madonna della Stella by Genesio Gualtieri of Mormanno and, on the façade, statues carved by Fuscaldo’s stonemasons. At Cariglio, on the square, San Michele Arcangelo was founded in 1735 as San Giovanni Evangelista, took its present name in 1952 and has been a parish since 1986. At Pesco, set in the countryside, the little church of the Beata Vergine del Soccorso bears on its façade a plaque of 1860 and on 5 August sees the statue of the Madonna carried on shoulders through the streets of the hamlet, after the novena; at San Pietro remains the small Santa Lucia, restored in the 1890s.
On the coast, where the railway and the SS18 pass, Marina di Fuscaldo has its Church of Santa Maria del Rosario, opened on 25 November 1907: inside, an altarpiece of 1973 and the large Last Supper of 1981 by the painter Antonio Bertè, exhibited all over Italy before arriving here in 1983, and a bas-relief Via Crucis by the Roman sculptor Alberto Ricci, of 1980, donated by the art historian Francesco Samà.
