Abatemarco and the Castle of San Michele

The medieval settlement destroyed by a flood in the 17th century, with the ruins of the castle and the Norman aqueduct: Santa Maria del Cedro was born from here.

Santa Maria del Cedro

Before Santa Maria del Cedro there was Abatemarco, an early medieval village that grew along the river bearing its name. In the 17th century a flood of the Abatemarco destroyed it: the inhabitants moved down the valley and founded, around a farmstead, the town that would be called Cipollina and later Santa Maria del Cedro.

Of the abandoned village remain the ruins of the Castle of San Michele, the municipality’s only military building, and a Norman aqueduct; the traces of the medieval settlement join the Greek remains of Laos and the Torre Sant’Andrea, the coastal tower that was part of the Riviera dei Cedri’s chain of lookouts. Together they tell of almost every age of this plain between the Lao and the Abatemarco.
