Island of Cirella
The islet facing Cirella, one of only two islands in Calabria, with a watchtower on top.
The island of Cirella rises off the hamlet of Cirella, north of Diamante’s centre, and is one of only two islands in Calabria (the other is the island of Dino, at Praia a Mare). On its top stand the ruins of a watchtower built between the late 1500s and early 1600s, one of the outposts that guarded the coast against Turkish raids: a 1615 document describes it as a royal tower armed with artillery and manned day and night.
The island is best admired from the Cirella seafront and from the ruins of the old village on the hill; the stretch of sea around it is today popular with swimmers and divers.
