Upper Tyrrhenian Cosentino · Riviera dei Cedri
Diamante
The “town of murals” and chilli-pepper capital, with the Blue Flag and the island of Cirella offshore.
Diamante is a town of about 4,900 inhabitants in the province of Cosenza, on the north-western Tyrrhenian coast, with about 8 km of beaches.
Geography
Off the coast lies the island of Cirella, one of Calabria’s few islands. In 2021 Diamante received the Blue Flag.
History
Its tourist and cultural vocation took hold in the 20th century, weaving together street art and the gastronomic tradition of the chilli pepper.
What to see
Diamante is famous as the town of murals: in 1981, at Nani Razetti’s initiative, 85 artists from around the world painted the walls of the centre (in 2021 the “Murales40” project). It is also the chilli-pepper capital, with the Peperoncino Festival held since 1992 and the Italian Chilli Academy.
Getting there
By car via the A2 “del Mediterraneo” motorway; by train on the Tyrrhenian railway line; the nearest airport is Lamezia Terme.
