Torre del Semaforo

The 16th-century tower overlooking Diamante’s old town, today a museum and information point.

Diamante

The Torre del Semaforo overlooks Diamante’s old town. It was built in the 16th century as a watchtower at the behest of Girolamo Sanseverino, prince of Bisignano, when the coast had to defend itself from raids from the sea. As trade grew, by the mid-1600s it became the seat of the customs house.

In the late 1800s the tower was restored and raised: the merchant navy installed a 40-metre mast for sightings and telegraph signalling, hence the name “semaforo” (signal station). In 2016 it passed from the State to the town of Diamante, which turned it into a multipurpose venue: museum, home to cultural events and tourist information point. It is the ideal starting point for a tour of the murals.
